I’ve made the comparison between weight loss and debt reduction before, but I’ve been thinking more about it since it’s time for New Year’s resolutions and weight loss is #1 among them.

In my experience, weight loss is harder, but I am still struck by its similarities to getting out of debt.

The thing is that really (and as annoying people will always tell you), losing weight and getting out of debt can both be boiled down to the numbers. You consume less than you burn and you spend less than you earn. Yeah, maybe for robots. But, neither is so simple when humans are involved.

The biggest obstacle for me in both is the mind tricks I play on myself. It’s one thing when you know what you’re doing and willfully decide to go against your better judgment. It’s another thing when you convince yourself you are doing the right thing or that there really is no problem in the first place.

Even when I am super determined, I have to constantly remind myself of what I’m doing and why I want to do it, though both should be obvious. With both weight loss and debt reduction, you have to work hard every day, but you don’t immediately see the results of your work. It pays off, though, it does.
