It really hasn’t changed much, but since I just posted about how much money I put toward my debt every month, I thought I should update you on my budget. I used to use a simple table to track it all, but now that I’m down to one card, my budget is too simple to be worth tracking. I know my bills off the top of my head and (with the exception of rent) I pay them with my first check of the month.
Here’s my monthly budget:
Income: $3000 – $3200 between two (sometimes three) jobs.
Bills
- Rent: $800 (It’s going up to $815 in September)
- Cell: $95
- Car Insurance: $100
- Netflix: $10
- Gas: $30
- Food: $250
- Household: $50 (quarters for laundry, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc.)
*I also pay $53 a month for medical, dental, and vision, as well as put some money toward retirement, but that’s all subtracted from my pay check, so I never count it in my income.
I’m usually able to put $1700-1800 toward my debt each month.

I’m so jealous..really. I wish I only had a few bills like you do….rather than tons of them! We haven’t really made any progress lately with our bills. I’m thinking about focusing on 1 credit card at a time and pay minimums on all the others.
I also read somewhere about a woman who only paid $185 a month on groceries for her family of 4. Amazing!!
You definitely make a lot more than I do a month.
Rent $775 (parking included)
Mobile: $95
Car Insurance: $300-$400 (every 6 months)
Gas: $100 (w/ some mileage reimbursement for work)
Food: $250-300 (includes groceries & eating out)
Utilities: $25-80 (electric is monthly, cooking gas is bi-monthly)
Shopping: $150-$200 (includes household items AND personal wants)
Internet: $66
Pet Supplies: $20-30
Coffee Shops: $20
Alcohol: $50-75 (includes drinks for social networking events)
Amusement: $50 (concerts, movies or something similar)
Haircut: $17
Misc: $30 (Laundry, misc, parking meters)
What about utilities, like internet?? Is that included in rent?
Wow, great work! I finally paid off my student loans and became debt free as of April of this year. I got myself through it by telling myself that when I paid everything off, I would get myself something from this store:

In the end, I became so frugal I still haven’t bought it because I don’t want to fork over the $50!!!
I wish I could put as much of my income into my debt. Unfortunately my income covers precisely my life (as NYC living…) and so whatever I make in my freelance gig is what goes to my debt. I can usually put $300-$500 a month towards debt, if I don’t have any major expenses.
That’s your monthly income!?!? Holy crap. I clearly need new jobs.
